Junior Negotiation Competition Final 2025
Junior Negotiation Competition Winners with Judges 2025
Negotiations
Negotiation is an essential tool for a lawyer in the modern age. Its prevalence in being the premier Alternative Dispute Resolution means we will be holding a range of negotiation competitions that will each be tailored to the level of legal education that our competitors have.
Our Junior Negotiation Competition is solely for first year students. It is designed to develop and enhance practical use of legal knowledge gained through coursework. It will do this whilst simultaneously replicating the highly professional and competitive nature of a negotiation. Our Senior Negotiation Competition for second years and above features more sophisticated scenarios and emphasises realism.
Client Interviewing
Our Client Interviewing Competition is open exclusively to second- and third-year students. Teams of two will conduct a simulated client interview with a fellow student acting as the client. Designed to mirror realistic practice scenarios, the competition develops essential client consultation skills and provides practical legal experience in a structured, supportive environment.
Effective client interviewing is fundamental to legal practice. Participation not only reinforces learning from course modules but also gives aspiring solicitors a tangible advantage by honing communication, problem‑solving and professional conduct under pressure. Students will leave better prepared for placements, interviews and future client-facing work.
Mediation
Mediation is another form of ADR used to settle a dispute between two parties. This competition will involve teams of two who will communicate with two present parties, with actors taking on those roles. The mediatory teams will listen to each party, facilitate discussions, and negotiate on their behalf in order to encourage a mutually agreeable resolution.
To succeed, mediators will need to employ active listening, impartial questioning, and creative problem‑solving to propose flexible, realistic solutions that address the interests of both sides. The Mediation Competition is open to all years and provides students with an alternative format in which to practise and broaden their legal skills and practical experience, including negotiation, client management, and ethical decision‑making.
Speech
As a committee, we agree that public speaking is an essential skill for every lawyer. Both barristers and solicitors rely on strong oral communication in their work, each in their own way, whether arguing in court, advising clients, or presenting complex legal ideas. This competition aims to push students beyond their comfort zones and help them develop more confident, persuasive, and effective speakers. It is open to students from all year groups and welcomes diverse experience levels.
