Competitions

At LULS we run a varied programme of competitions designed to develop practical, career-focused legal skills. Our events provide hands-on experience in legal research, oral and written advocacy, case strategy and client communication, while also strengthening teamwork, time management and professional confidence.

Competitions are overseen by the relevant directors who offer office hours, deliver detailed feedback from qualified judges, and facilitate networking with law firms and chambers.

  • Develop advocacy skills through simulated appellate hearings, requiring research of legal authorities, construct persuasive arguments, and respond effectively to judicial questioning.

    Competitors argue opposing sides of a legal issue before a panel of judges, testing their ability to think critically and present arguments under pressure.

  • Recreates the experience of a trial, allowing participants to practise advocacy and litigation skills in a realistic courtroom setting.

    Competitors examine evidence, question witnesses, make submissions, and work as a team to present their case before a judge or judging panel.

  • Tests participants’ understanding of current commercial, economic, and legal developments and their implications for businesses and the legal profession.

    Competitors must demonstrate their ability to analyse unfamiliar issues, identify commercial risks, and communicate practical insights clearly.

  • Simulates an initial meeting between a solicitor and a prospective client, focusing on effective communication, questioning, and legal analysis.

    Competitors must establish rapport, identify the client’s objectives and legal issues, and provide clear, appropriate preliminary advice.

  • Simulates a professional negotiation between parties with competing interests, requiring participants to balance advocacy with strategic compromise.

    Competitors must identify their client’s priorities, develop effective negotiating strategies, and work towards a mutually beneficial outcome.

  • Simulates a dispute-resolution process in which participants seek to facilitate agreement between parties without resorting to litigation.

    Competitors must demonstrate active listening, problem-solving, empathy, and persuasive communication while identifying common ground and working towards a sustainable resolution.

  • Develops participants’ public speaking, persuasion, and presentation skills through speeches on a set topic or issue.

    Competitors are assessed on the clarity and structure of their argument, delivery, confidence, and ability to engage and persuade an audience.
