About Us

Founded in 1966, LULS has been a part of over 5,000 student’s education at the University of Leicester with a current student body membership of over 800 and our alumni spanning the world.

At LULS, our mission is to support the personal, academic, and professional development of every member throughout their time at university. We achieve this through four core pillars: Careers, Competitions, Skills, and Social Events, delivering accessible, engaging, and impactful opportunities that enhance the student experience, supported by clear communication and sustainable practices that strengthen the Society's long-term success and future growth.

What distinguishes LULS is our commitment to both excellence and accessibility. We are proud to have been the first student-led law society in the UK to introduce a financial bursary scheme through the Aspiring Black Lawyers Fund in partnership with Herbert Smith Freehills. This later expanded into our Social Mobility Bursary, and in 2025 we launched our Formal Workwear Bursary Scheme, helping students access professional attire and opportunities with confidence. Alongside these initiatives, we subsidise tickets for our annual Law Ball and have committed to hosting at least two charitable events each semester in support of a nominated charity.

Our commitment to excellence has been recognised through numerous awards and achievements, including nominations for the Students’ Union Student Group of the Year Award and Best President short-listings in 2024 and 2025. Nationally, we were awarded Best Society for Non-Law Students by LawCareers.Net in 2020 and Best Law Society Overall in 2018. These honours represent only a small selection of our wider successes. Recent highlights include winning the ESU Essex Court Chambers Moot and Midland Mooting Cup in 2025, reaching the Grand Final of the BPP Advocate of the Year Competition on multiple occasions, reaching the semi-finals of the Inner Temple Moot 2025, and hosting the final of our Senior Mooting Competition at the UK Supreme Court in 2023 before Lord Sales.
