I. Secretary’s Welcome
Welcome to the Newsletter, my name is Ankit Patel and I am the Secretary of the Leicester University Law Society for the 2026-2027 academic year. I am very excited to be taking charge of the newsletter.
I was one of the First-Year Representatives last year and have been involved with LULS from the start of my time here at university. I have loved every minute of it so it is an honour to be Secretary for this academic year. My advice to you, whether you are first, second, third, or even fourth year study abroad students, is get involved. It is never too late to get stuck in with the society and we have so many amazing opportunities, there is something for everyone.
It has been great to see so many people during freshers week and it would be amazing to see that same enthusiasm throughout the year. We have lots of big things planned and I cannot wait to see what we will achieve together. In further on in each edition, there will be a section of the newsletter called the Secretary’s Spotlight where I will highlight one or two key events that are coming up that I think should not be missed!
I hope to see you at these events, and if you see me, come over and say hi!
II. What to Expect From the LULS Newsletter
This academic year’s newsletter will feature two issues per month. The first of these issues will be released on the first Monday of every month and will contain a spotlight article from the Law Gazette, Commercial Awareness Blog, and, in the future, the Law Review.
The second issue will be released a fortnight later and will be a much smaller and condensed issue, limited to an opportunities edition which will outline the upcoming opportunities open to our members.
The newsletter is organised and edited by the Secretary of the Leicester University Law Society. If you have any questions regarding the newsletter, please send them to either arvhp1@student.le.ac.uk or su-luls@leicester.ac.uk.
III. Presidential Address
Welcome to the Leicester University Law Society (LULS), a community founded on ambition, opportunity, and mutual support!
My name is Thomas Wyatt, and I am honoured to serve as President for the 2026–2027 academic year. Together with an exceptional committee, I am excited to build on the Society’s success and introduce new opportunities that will enhance both the professional and personal development of our members.
LULS has been at the heart of my university experience. From serving as a First-Year Representative and Secretary to now holding the position of President, I have seen first-hand the impact that the Society can have. Through mooting competitions, committee roles, and representing the University externally, I have developed skills, confidence, and friendships that have shaped my time at Leicester. These experiences have reinforced the value of a society that encourages students not only to succeed individually, but to support one another’s growth.
As a member of LULS, you will have access to a wide range of opportunities. Whether your interests lie in competitions, careers, commercial awareness, sports, social events, or networking with legal professionals, there is something for everyone. This year, I am particularly pleased to announce the launch of the Leicester Law Review, a new student-led publication that will provide an additional platform for academic writing. Through a peer-review process, students will have the opportunity to publish high-quality legal research and contribute to academic discussion within the School of Law.
Inclusivity and wellbeing remain central to everything we do. University can be both exciting and challenging, and no one should feel they have to navigate it alone. Our Mentoring Scheme and Formal Workwear Bursary Scheme continue to provide meaningful support to students, and I am delighted that we will be expanding these initiatives during the year ahead.
I encourage every member to get involved, explore new opportunities, and make the most of everything LULS has to offer. I look forward to welcoming both new and returning students and seeing our community continue to thrive.
If you have any questions, suggestions, or ideas, please feel free to contact me at tpw7@student.le.ac.uk or through our general email.
Thomas Wyatt
LULS President 2026-2027

V. Our Initiatives
The Law Society offers lots to its members, not just events and competitions but careers, social events and legal writing opportunities.
Careers:
Our careers team host dedicated careers events and opportunities geared towards the bar, solicitor and alternative careers routes. They have dedicated career group chats and mentorship schemes. Some of the key events are the Annual Networking Event and the Winter Careers Dinner.
Competitions:
We offer a wide variety of competitions from oral advocacy based mooting, mock trial and speech competitions, to client interviewing, negotiation, mediation and commercial awareness competitions. We also offer the opportunity to compete externally if you do well enough in internal competitions such as the Junior and Senior Mooting competitions.
Socials and Events:
The Law Society also offers things outside of the law where you can get to know your peers. Some of these events include the Annual Law Ball, Law Awards, Halloween Bar Crawl, and, new this year, Murder Mystery Night
Sports:
On top of our social events, we also have both a football and netball team that compete against other teams at the university. Both teams are open to all abilities and are a great way to stay active and decompress. We also host an Annual Charity Match where the LULS Committee plays against the Pro Bono committee and it would be great to see as many of you in attendance supporting our charities!
Legal Writing:
Finally, we also offer the opportunity to practise your legal writing skills by joining the long-standing Law Gazette or the newly founded Law Review, coming soon. You will have the opportunity to have an article written by you published in one of these journals.

VII. Secretary’s Spotlight
LULS Committee Meet & Greet - 5th October:
Come and meet this year’s Law Society Committee! You can come and say hi and ask us any questions you may have about the upcoming year and the events we host. This is a great way to get to know who we are. There will be free food and drink at the event and we have a game planned to play.
We would love to see you there!
Speed Mooting Applications Open - 5th October:
Speed moot applications are opening soon and close on the 17th of October. This is for first time mooters only and a great chance for all first years to get a taste of advocacy. You can either sign up with a partner or have a partner assigned to you. It is one round of competing with the top two highest scoring teams going through to the final which will be judged by two professional barristers.
Junior Moot Final - 8th of October:
The junior moot final is the very first competition final of the year, and the first event organised by this year’s Directors of Mooting, Jorja Wood and Elise Harriman. The two finalist pairs have excelled through five rounds of competition last year and will now be judged by two barristers from No5 Chambers. For first years, this is a great opportunity to see what a moot is all about, before competing in Speed Mooting. Come along and support our finalists!
